Gear Up Students Interviewed on Channel 5

Gear Up Students present at National Conference in San Francisco

August 04, 2009

On July 19-22, 2009, The National Council for Community and Education Partnerships hosted a group of students from La Villa and two other valley schools as presenters at the National  GEAR UP at the Forefront: Leading the Way in College AccessConference, in San Francisco, California.  Michael Castillo, Lizette Villarreal and Celeste Guajardo co-presented at a breakout session on the initiatives of the Gear Up Program.

This conference convened GEAR UP and other college access professionals, as well as their partners for informative concurrent sessions, exciting speakers, and valuable networking opportunities. The majority of concurrent sessions were led directly by GEAR UP professionals sharing their strongest programs, most successful partnerships, and best institutional practices.

Michael Castillo, one of the presenters and student at LVHS said, "The trip was awesome, not only was the city beautiful, but the conference exposed us to the many educational opportunities available outside of the Rio Grande Valley."

The students were later interviewed on News Channel 5 by Letty Valadez, Region One's Gear Up Ambassador.
