Jose B. Munoz Elementary On Fire for Fire Prevention
Almost 300 J. B. Muñoz students were treated to an exciting
presentation by the La Villa Volunteer Fire Department on Friday,
October 09. Hidalgo County Deputy Fire Marshall Mark Romero joined
the La Villa FD at the JBM cafeteria to raise awareness of the
importance of fire prevention.
Every year Fire Prevention Week is observed around the country. La
Villa ISD participates by having students compete in the
Department’s annual Poster Contest. Our students have experienced
good success in this contest before.
“A couple of years ago we had two Muñoz students advance to the
Valley-wide contest,” said Fire Chief Dino Pérez. “Then they won
and advanced to State in Beaumont.” Maybe this year someone’s
poster can make it all the way to Nationals in Washington, D.C.
Also participating in the program were Herb and Gwen Willich,
Deputy Chief and Secretary respectively.
Besides Romero’s presentation, students were taught through a
training video that included a fun lecture and happy songs. Then
everyone went outside to see the fire trucks with all their
equipment. This always seems to be a highlight of the week.
Chief Pérez was very pleased to see the great turnout throughout
the morning.
“I enjoy working for our community,” he said. “Sometimes we lose
track of helping others.”
Those others include our students, most of whom appeared excited
and appreciative.
“I love my fire hat and the pencil,” said a little first grader.
“Thank you.”
The faculty and staff of JBM are also very grateful. Thank you,
LVVFD! Thanks for a great Fire Prevention Week.
