YAC Members Enjoy Fine Food and the Superintendent’s YAC Council Meeting
What do these students have in common?
Jaime Puga
Jayde López
Isaiah Treviño
Gilbert Hinojosa
José Hernández
They are the J. B. Muñoz representatives on the district Youth
Advisory Council (YAC).
These students meet regularly, along with members from the middle
and high schools, to provide input to Superintendent Dr. Norma L.
Salaiz.
“We are there to help make positive changes in the school
district,” third grader Jaime Puga said.
“We are also supposed to help the community,” echoed fourth grader
Isaiah Treviño.
Thursday, October 15, YAC members traveled to South Padre Island to
participate in “Safari 2009,” a child nutrition program sponsored
by the Region I Education Service Center.
“We tasted food from many different booths,” fifth grade
representative Gilbert Hinojosa said. “Then we reported on the
kinds of food we liked.”
Food services directors will then take the feedback and factor it
in their decision-making for planning their menus. LVISD Director
Mary Cázares attended the festival, and was very pleased with the
results.
“They ate from over 120 exhibits,” she said. “We found out about
several foods we might be able to use. For example, they really
liked some pre-sweetened pancakes that come with the syrup already
infused. That should make breakfast a lot neater.”
The YAC didn’t like everything, though, especially at the
beginning.
“I felt like vomiting on the first one,” said fifth grader José
Hernández. “It was broccoli with pasta, and I don’t like
broccoli.”
The YAC met on Monday, October 19th debrief and to brainstorm for
their next project, the Red Ribbon Week October 23rd through
October 31st, District Fall Festival October 31st, November
Projects, Parental Involvement Workshop on November 21st.
“We want to have a safe experience for our students,” Dr. Salaiz
said. “At the same time, we want them to have fun.”
The Padre Island experience was safe and fun…but also exhausting,
if you ask fourth grader Jayde López.
“Your feet get tired when you walk a lot,” she said. “I just want
to take a nap.”
