Red Ribbon Presentation
by Debbie Winslow
November 11, 2009
Without saying a word, two four-legged agents stole the show.
Canines Bosco and Dick helped their handlers keep 150 third, fourth
and fifth graders captivate for a full hour Tuesday afternoon at
Muñoz Elementary cafeteria.
“I was amazed,” said teacher Susie Espericueta. “Our children were
so attentive and responsive.”
Students witnessed an enthralling presentation by representatives
of Hidalgo County’s Community Oriented Policing Program, in
conjunction with the K9 Bureau.
“It was excellent,” said PK-4 teacher Bertha Reyes. “They were
really listening.”
Deputies and officers gave powerful lectures on the dangers of drug
use. Some audience members had tears in their eyes as they
reflected on the relevance and truth of the message.
“I have lost several of my own students,” Principal Debbie Lee
Winslow said. “Even after Red Ribbon Weeks has been around, alcohol
and drugs have killed them.”
Counselor Macaria Salinas was also touched and impressed.
“I’m so glad they came,” she said. “It was a very appropriate
presentation for their grade levels.”
The assembly seemed to have a real impact on Muñoz students, who
gave the best response to drugs:
“NO! NO! NO!” they shouted repeatedly at the top of their
lungs.
