A Job Well Done: Through Project Learning, Muñoz Students Learn About Careers
by Debbie Winslow
November 23, 2009
When it started, most children didn’t know what a project is, and
most teachers were concerned because they do know. With a two-week
deadline facing them, La Villa ISD students embarked on a research
project dealing with careers. Muñoz Elementary took it seriously,
and the result was an exhibit of over 300 student projects.
“These are delightful!” beamed Superintendent Norma L. Salaiz. “You
all outdid yourselves.”
Projects were judged on the basis of originality within certain
parameters. For example, kindergarteners used paper bags, first
graders used cans, and older students used boxes. For their next
projects, all students will use a different medium.
“It was fair because they all had the same criteria at their given
grade level,” curriculum assistant Juan Guajardo said. “Within
those bounds, they had freedom to be creative.”
Each grade was judged by itself. Winning entries were ranked from
first through ninth place, with all other students receiving
participation ribbons.
“Even if you didn’t place, every child who turned in a project was
a winner,” said an excited teacher.
“This is a great way to learn,” Guajardo said. “Some of these
children will remember this project for the rest of their lives.
And who knows? Some might end up becoming what they
envisioned.”
Whether they become one day what they foresee today, all students
got to learn about the opportunities available to them in the world
of work.
Good job, Muñoz Elementary!
