From the Home Front: La Villa Adopts Troops in Iraq

“It was the Middle School's idea,” said Dr. Norma Salaiz.  “Dr. Salaiz suggested that we adopted Benny Contreras's unit, since he is a home town boy.”

Mrs. Minnie Contreras was talking about her son, First Sergeant Benny Contreras, who is in charge of the 141st Company A division of the Army.  Contreras’ troops are stationed at Camp Bucca in Southern Iraq.

“This is a district project,” Mrs. Contreras continued.  “We are showing the soldiers how much we appreciate their service.”

Student leaders representing the Kids That Kare Club, the Student Council, and the Migrant Club have led the charge in collecting food, toiletries, and other goods the soldiers might need.

Muñoz Elementary sent ten boxes filled with all kinds of non-perishable items.  Central Office personnel filled five boxes, and La Villa Middle School will be sending 23.  All 38 boxes were mailed to Company A, and Sergeant Contreras distributed  the goods to the men and women under him.

Mrs. Contreras expressed her gratitude on behalf of Benny and the soldiers:  “We want to give warm thanks to everybody that participated.”
