La Villa ISD Teachers Participate in a SIOP Best Practice
Elementary, Middle School, and High School teachers joined forces on January 19, 2010 to collaborate on Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol (SIOP) best practice ideas when working with the English Language Learners (ELLs).
Over forty-four staff members participated in the three-hour session that focused on interaction and application strategies that promote higher level thinking skills, supportive grouping, scaffolding techniques and clarification in the student’s native language. Dr. Salaiz, Superintendent of Schools stated that, “This is the fifth Best Practice session we have conducted this school year where teachers can learn about practical strategies to help their students improve their academic performance. It is always exciting to see teachers learning from each other.”
Other Best Practices topics addressed by La Villa staff members this school year include Project Based Learning, Vocabulary Development, Writing Across Content Areas, and the 5E Model of Instruction (Engage, Explore, Explain, Elaborate, Evaluate). “I want to thank all the La Villa ISD staff members that attended the after school best practice sessions. It demonstrates your dedication and commitment to our children when you are willing to extend your already long working day to include an additional three hours of training.
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! ”, says Dr. Salaiz.
