The cold front brought with it excitement and jubilation to Muñoz Elementary.

The halls were packed with rows of students sitting like an India, paying homage to their campus heroes.

And then they came. Some holding hands with parents. Some carrying baskets with balloons. Some doing both. All with smiles from ear to ear.

The occasion was the first Six Weeks Parade of the year. It is a celebration held to recognize the academic and comportment successes of our students.

The turnout was so great that parking became an issue for the event. Parents, of course, were beaming with pride.

“My daughter is in second grade, and I love her,” said the parent of one award winner. As did just about each parent, she exclaimed, “I’m very proud of her.”

The parade tradition has been going on for several years now. “I can’t even remember who started it,” one veteran teacher said. “I just wish we could recognize even more of our students.”

The teacher shared that originally there was a committee that discussed and voted on qualifying criteria. By now all teachers and students know the ground rules. Each classroom is awarded one Super Cardinal and as many A/B honor roll honorees as make the grade.

The event lasted less than half an hour, but it seems that the effects might linger and make an impression for some time to come.

“A third grader told me he didn’t like it because he wasn’t in it,” one administrator said. “I have a hunch that student is going to work much harder next six weeks.”
