Spooky Fest 2009: The Munõz Tradition Continues

How do you cram moon-jumping, festival games, and delicious food into three short hours? Simple, but you’ll have to wait until next year, when Muñoz Elementary will again hold its annual October Spooky Fest.

This year’s edition was a blast…and a great fund raiser to top it off.

“There were a lot of people,” Mr. Aaron Díaz said. “About 250 more or less.”

Counselor Dr. Macaria Salinas disagreed.

“It was that many times two, minus 100,” she said. “It was a real success.”

The arrival of the holiday season was welcomed by enthusiastic teachers and students, many of whom dressed in delightful and creative costumes.

“We had a nun in one booth, and her sister the witch in another,” said Mr. Juan Guajardo. “I also saw a fairy and a tiger…and those four were just the teachers!”

Pleasant cool weather and wonderful student behavior made the afternoon even more of an enjoyable event.

“Look what I got!” said a little first grader. “I won this in one game.”

Everybody seemed to be a winner, especially some like fourth grader José Rangel.

“Look what I won,” he said as he showed off his prize cakes. “I paid fifty cents and won this big one.”

Parents, relatives, friends, and students walked from booth to booth in search of fun. And they found plenty of if. Second grader Matthew Herrera beat his father Tommy in the potato sack race…as Mrs. Herrera documented the victory on her video camera.

And students and families kept coming and coming.

“They came in droves,” math teacher Natalie Maldonado said. “It was good, we made $212.”

Some students did run out of money, but most of them still kept a positive attitude.

“I can’t wait until next year,” said a little one.
